Facts of Life Counting, Counting by DaHeap If a person counted at the rate of 100 numbers a minute, and kept on counting for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, it would take a little over 4 weeks to count to a million - and just over 80 years of nonstop counting to reach 1 billion.
A little trick called Double Figures
A simple mathematical trick can enable you to discover any number a person thinks of - and find out his or her age as well. Ask the person to pick a number of any size, double it, add 5, and multiply the result by 50. Next, tell the person to add 1,737 (this key number changes every year; for 1988 the number rises to 1,378, and so on for each subsequent year, for the year 2005 the number would is 1,755). Then ask the person to subtract the year in which he or she was born. The last two digits in the final answer will tell you the person's age on his or her birthday this year; the others will be the number first thought of. From Reader's Digest Book of Facts 1987. |
